I am very excited to say I was able to put the fuel tank back on the car without major issues today. This was a project I started over a year ago and had put off finishing until recently. I used a floor jack to hold the tank up and car jack inside the hatch back with rope to help position the tank in place and hold it there while I secured it to the car and installed the tank holding strap which I got for Christmas 2012.
I wouldn't have been able to do all this without the help of 928 owners posting their knowledge and experience online for others to use. Here are the links to the two sites I used for this project. They have a lot of pictures and step by step instructions so you can see the whole process I went through.

I still need to install the hose from the new "in-tank" filter to the fuel pump. I have the hose but still need to order the pump. One of the rubber bushings broke on the pump/fuel filter mount when I uninstalled it last year so I'll have to order that too, but the major work is done.
While the tank was out I took the opportunity to replace a damaged bumper (buffer). The previous owner gave me the part when I bought the car from him because he was meaning to replace it but never got around to it. I understand now what that's like because I bought the car in 2006 and just got around to replacing it 7 years later.
