This is the Mass Airflow Meter which measures the amount of air being drawn into the engine. It sends signals to the fuel injector controller to open or close the injectors base on the airflow so that the correct air/fuel ratio is maintained at all times.
Being a new 928 owner I had no idea what the MAF was until my car started running really badly one day. After doing a lot of research online I came across the JDSPorsche.com website which has a lot of information about the MAF, how it works, and how to trouble shoot it to see if it has failed. Here is the website if you're interesting in learning more about it: http://www.jdsporsche.com/faq.html
As it turns my MAF was no longer working and needed to be fixed/replaced. JDSPorsche is located in England but they have a authorized dealer in the U.S. that will rebuild your MAF for $350.00. Ott's Performance Engineering is the shop and here's their website link: http://www.performance928.com/cgi-bin/page_display.cgi?page_nav_name=qa7uk&pass_parent=0
Below are some pictures of removing the MAF to send off for the rebuild. When I got it back and reinstalled, it ran better than it ever had.
