It all started when my fuel pump stopped working and I went to the Rennlist Porsche 928 forums looking for advice. Wally Plumley from 928 Specialists diagnosed that the problem was my pump was jammed probably due to debris from the fuel tank. I decided to just buy another fuel pump and filter which worked for a couple of months of weekly driving and then the exact same thing happened. Fuel pump stopped working with the same signs and symptoms. That's when I realized that Wally was also correct about why my original pump died in the first place.
So I reluctantly started the process of removing the fuel tank from the car so that I could inspect the tank and see what was going on in there. I've never removed a fuel tank form a car before and was very apprehensive about trying to do this by myself until I found some help online. Here is a link to the step by step instructions I used to do this project posted by Dwayne in the 928 Rennlist Forums. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/928-forum/610125-84-fuel-tank-removal-procedure-w-pics.html I would not have been able to do this job without his guide.
Here are some pictures of the process and what I found when I was able to look into the tank. I removed the fuel tank and cleaned it and bought a new fuel tank mounting bracket because the original one was rusted pretty bad. I bought and installed a new in tank fuel screen/filter and also installed a brand new fuel level sender unit, as you can see from the pictures. I also bought a new fuel pump and filter and cleaned the rust off of the fuel tank filler neck.
