The odometer wasn't working when I bought the car and neither was the fuel level indicator so I had no idea how far I could drive before I ran out of gas. I figured if I fixed the odometer I could top off the gas tank, drive for 20 miles and then fill it up again and see how many gallons of gas I used. Once I calculated my miles per gallon I could use the trip meter as an indicator to see when I need to fuel up again based on how many miles I've driven.
Below are pictures of the broken gear that I had to replace to fix the odometer. I purchased the replacement gear from Rennbay Inc. in 2007 for $34.25 including S&H.
